Gentlemen,
My name is Maurice Healy. There were 7 relatives in my family that served for the Union. Two of whom served in the 15th Mass Co I other known as the Slater Guards. The Slaters Guards left for Washington Aug 8, 1861. This coming Aug 20th the town of Webster is hosting a commemoration to honor the Slater Guards. So far some members of the 15th, Battery B 1st RI LA and the young Marines will be in attendance. Located at the town hall is a very large 40 foot high Civil War monument. With 5 soldiers in 125% size. There are two opperational Boat Howitzers on the lawn. Also inside the lobby is a very sexy rifled howitzer like near perfect all original. We will be conducting a ceromony, drilling on the guns, training new cadets and letting the young Marines show us up lol. It would be an honor if your regiment could attend. Also on this day the town has a grand opening of a new park directly accross the street. A big crowd is expected, there will be food vendors on site as well. The Providence Brigade Band could be there as well. There is two bands the Yankee Dogs and the Pulaski Brass Band alreadt scheduled to play. I know that this is a late invite but your regiment would be a crowd pleaser.
                                                                                           Sincerely,
                                                                                            Pvt Maurice Healy

Hi, I am a 6th cousin of Elmer Ellworth's...I was there at the reenactment Sunday. My husband & I live in the Chicago suburbs, and drove over. I had spoken to Ray LeMay by phone, who said that we Elmer cousins would have our photos taken in front of the his memorial stone after the event. Obviously, I knew that would not happen because of the rain, and so be it. I accept that all was not perfect because of the rain. But I did connect with about 4 of my Ellsworth cousins, and you caught a picture of one who was reenacting as a Zouave. So thank you for all your photos, as they are so valuable to us here. I never had been to New York before, and did not know my cousins up there at all...Ray said I was the 13th cousin to call him, and at the museum afterward, I found another one...I had my genealogy with me, which definately proves with NO doubt that I am a cousin. And the cousin I spoke to at the museum and I went over all my charts together right there...We found her people in them...so we were able to verify who she was. I actually have Ellsworth charts that date back to the yr. 1506. I do not seek attention for being a cousin of Elmer's. But I think it would be good to have us cousins (who are willing to share) called to the front, and we could have connected more easily, and then perhaps we could have had our photos taken with some of the people and groups. I will email Ray my thoughts...I looked for him but did not find him. I just wanted to let you know how very very valuable your photos are...Our digital camera started to beep in the middle of the event. So I never got a shot of the flowers at the grave, etc. My connection to Elmer goes back to the 1600's, when Elmer's ancestor and mine (brothers) got off the boat from England to this country. Anyway, I am willing to share with anyone who wants to email me. Thanks again. Patty Tinsley

Thank you for your interest in our unit! The SLI did not see any combat in their 90-day militia enlistment in 1861. They were primarily stationed outside of Baltimore, Maryland.

After they mustered out in August '61, some members re-enlisted into other regiments, such as 19th Mass in late August '61 and Co. A 23rd Mass. in 1862.

The best information available is "History of the Salem Light Infantry: 1805 - 1890" by George Mantum Whipple. It is available online at Google Books:
